John S. Rigo, age 88, of Lorain, died Thursday, October 21, 2004 at his residence while under the care of New Life Hospice following a lengthy illness.
Born Jan. 9, 1916 in Elkhorn, West Virginia, he came to Lorain in the 1920s
He served in the US Army with the 6th Calvary during World War II. After this he worked in the Lorain Ship Yards before being drafted into the Navy. John served aboard the I. Miller in the Pacific during World War II.
He retired from John Hancock Life Insurance where he worked as an insurance agent for 25 years. Following this he worked for Gross Plumbing, Lorain as a clerk.
He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Lorain, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and the mens club of St. Anthony.
John volunteered with New Life Hospice, in Home Care and Outpatient Oncology for 17 years, and was the coordinator of the Hospice widowers group for 7 years.
He played minor league baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals in his youth.
He enjoyed antiquing and traveling with his wife. He was also a talented carpenter, having built his own house.
Surviving is his wife of 62 years, Sofia (Smolka), a sister-in-law; Anne Smolka of Lorain, and several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Joseph Sr. in 1968, and Carolina (nee Mezsaros) in 1975, brothers; Joseph Jr. in 1991, Gazie in 1987, sisters; Charlotte Beech in 1968, Margaret Kochis in 1972, and Helen Vick in 1987.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain, where funeral services will be Monday at 9:30 a.m. followed by mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 1305 E. Erie Ave. Rev. Fr. Joseph West, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
