John P. Skolnicki

September 25, 1923 — July 14, 2007

John P. "Yash" Skolnicki, age 83, of Lorain, died on Saturday, July 14, 2007, at Community Health Partners HSC - West, Lorain, after an extended illness.


He was born on September 25, 1923, in Lorain, Ohio. He had moved to Michigan before returning to Lorain in1958. He is a 1941 graduate of Lorain High School.


John served in the United States Army, in the Pacific Arena, during World War II. He was then employed by Dow Chemical in Midland, MI, and later with the State of Ohio as a personnel officer, then he was a Deputy Auditor for Lorain County for 10 years.


He was a member of St. John Roman Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Czarnecki Lodge # 1430, and the Polish National Alliance.


John enjoyed sports, especially basketball and softball. He was inducted into the Lorain Sports Hall of Fame in 1975, and also received State and National recognition for sports. He had pitched Dow Chemical to the World's Fast-pitch Title in 1951, as well.


He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary C. (nee Tomasic), 2 sons; John, of Tipp City, OH and Steven, of Vermilion, 3 daughters; Marilyn Hamel, of Amherst, Kathleen Blake, of Texas, and Susan Evans, of Maryland, 9 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and 3 sisters; Helen Szalay, of Lorain, Rose Dellisanti, of Amherst, and Virginia Armelie, of Lorain.


He was preceded in death by his parents; John and Tacyanna (nee Wozniak) Szkolnicki, a grandson, Bronson Blake, and 4 brothers; Joseph, Edward, Bruno, and Walter Skolnicki.


The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 18, from 4 - 8 pm, in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where closing prayers will be held the following morning at 9:30 am. A funeral mass will follow at 10:00 am, at St. John Roman Catholic Church, 2143 Homewood Drive, Lorain. The Rev. Fr. Thomas Smith will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain, with full military honors.
