John "Graney" Vancs, 89, of Huron, formerly of Lorain, passed away Sunday, July 26, 2015 at the Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky, following a lengthy illness.
Born August 10, 1925 in Lorain, he moved to Huron 7 years ago living with his niece Rosanne (David) Winbigler and his faithful companion Harbor, the family dog.
John graduated from Lorain High School and attended Bowling Green State University for 2 years. He served in the US Navy during World War II as a Gunner's Mate Third Class. He received the Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal.
John retired from Lorain Works US Steel. Prior to this he worked at Fruehauf Trailer Corporation. He was a member of the former St. Basil Byzantine Catholic Church, Lorain, the United Steel Workers Union Local 425 and the Romanian Union League.
Surviving is his brother, Traian Vancs of Newark, Ohio; and sisters, Ann Klanchar and Valeria Slack both of Amherst.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Amalia (nee Feher) Vancs; sister, Mary Simko, Lucretia Cook and Regina Vancs; brothers, Steve, George, Emil, Joseph, Theodore and Leon.
Private graveside services were held at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain. Very Rev. Canon M. Steven Paliwoda, pastor of St. John Byzantine Catholic Church, officiate. The Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter 20 will conduct military honors. The Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, handled the arrangements. To send online condolences go to
