Jose D. Gonzalez, age 80, of Lorain, entered eternal life, while surrounded by his devoted wife and loving children, on Tuesday, December 8, 2009, at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain, after a brief illness.
He was born on December 15, 1928, in Lares, Puerto Rico, making Lorain his home in 1952. He was a founding member of Sacred Heart Chapel, where he volunteered for the credit union for many years, member of the Cennacle community, and a founding member of the Cursillo Movement. Jose was a former president of the Holy Name Society, from where he was also awarded the "Man of the Year."
He was employed at Ford Motor Co., Brookpark, as a Final Inspector, for 37 years, before retiring in 1991. Prior to this, he was employed at Fruehauf Trailer Co.
Jose enjoyed politics and being a community activism, and was an avid walker. He enjoyed tending to his home and yard, with his loving wife by his side. Most of all, he had an immense love for his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Jose is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carmen A. (nee Dueno), his eight children, Jose M. "Pete" (Judy), of Amherst, Carlos (Partner Eddie), of San Francisco, CA, daughter, Nancy, of Lorain, Angel A. "Tony" (Gina), of Lorain, Rafael, of Sheffield Township., Roberto "Bobby", of Roseville, CA, Hector L. (Sherry), of Elyria, and Christobal J. (Michelle), of Lorain, 19 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, a brother, Ernesto, of San Juan, P.R., and sisters; Maria, of San Sebastian, PR and Isabel, of Lares, PR.
He was preceded in death by his 2 great grandsons, Elijah Riggins and Felix Ortiz, parents, Manuel and Inosencia (nee Molina) Gonzalez, brother, Angel and sisters, Francisca and Fidela. Beloved nephew, Orlando Gonzalez, Maunabo, PR beloved "Hermano" Camilo "Lilo" Gonzalez.
The family will receive friends on Friday, December 11 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Visitation will also be held on Saturday from 9 - 10 am, at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Avenue, Lorain. A funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Fr. William Thaden, pastor, and Deacon Lou Maldonado, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
