Jose Mariano Gonzalez, Sr., age 78, of Lorain, died Monday, March 6, 2006 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph.
He was born on July 28, 1927 in Lares, Puerto Rico, and resided in Lorain for the past 54 years.
Jose was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain, where he was a member of the Sociedad de Santo Nombre and the Cursillo de Cristiano. He was also a coach for one of the first Youth Baseball Team of Sacred Heart Chapel.
Surviving is his spouse of 53 years, Juanita (nee Lopez), his sons; Jose M., Jr., of Oberlin, Edwin, Harold B., and Nelson, all of Lorain, and Franklin, of Elyria, 10 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, his sisters; Esther Gonzalez de Borrero and Carmin Gonzalez de Ruiz, his brothers; Reynaldo, Ricard, and Amilcar Gonzalez, all of Lares, Puerto Rico, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sons; William and David Gonzalez, his parents; Jose Ernesto and Mariana (nee Roman) Gonzalez, three brothers; Nestor, Ismael, and Norberto Gonzalez, and a sister, Maria Gonzalez de Castro.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 9, from 5-8 p.m. at the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where services will be held the following morning at 8:45. A funeral mass will follow at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Avenue, Lorain. The Rev. Fr. William Thaden will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Lorain.
