Joseph R. Nagy, age 80, of Sheffield Township, died on Wednesday, March 7, 2007 in the Emergency Room at Community Health Partners, following a sudden illness.
He was born on October 3, 1926 in Lorain, and was a lifelong resident.
He was a 1944 B graduate of Lorain High School. He had also attended Lorain Business College, and Purdue University receiving Army Specialist Training.
Joe served as a tec 5 in the United States Army during World War II, having received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal Japan and 2 Overseas Service Bars.
He was employed at Lorain Works US Steel in the production planning dept. for over 29 years, retiring in 1987. He also sold real estate part time with various local companies.
He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, where he served as councilman, lector and usher. He also was a Holy Name Society member and bingo worker and caller. He was also a member of the United Steel Workers Union Local #2354 and American Legion Post #30.
Joe enjoyed playing drums in a dance band, reading, golfing and bowling with St. Stanislaus mixed league. He helped organize the first Boy Scout troop #323 at St Stanislaus and served as Scout Master for 5 years.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years: Margaret (nee Meszes), sons: Joseph D. Nagy, of Sheffield Lake, Larry Nagy of Broadview Heights, Raymond Nagy of Defiance, OH and daughters: Margaret Ann Avery of New York City and Elaine Busser of Thevillages, Florida, and 3 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Joseph and Helen (nee Kalenak) Nagy, son: Greg Nagy in 1991 and brother: Ernie Nagy in 2000.
The family will receive friends on Friday, March 9, 2007 from 6-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where funeral services will be held on Saturday at 9:45 a.m. followed by a 10:00 a.m. mass at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. David Novak, will officiate. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain. The American Legion Post #30 will conduct full military honors.
