Joseph Yavornitzky, age 91, of Lorain, died Thursday, January 16, 2025, at Avon Oaks Caring Community following a lengthy illness.
Joseph, one of nine children of Harry and Mary (nee Kuchma) Yavornitzky, was born on March 18, 1933, in Lorain. He was a lifelong city resident, graduating from Lorain High School in 1951. Following high school, Joseph took on the role of a retail manager at Fisher Foods Company in Oberlin. In 1953, he proudly entered the US Army, serving his country with unwavering dedication. His commitment and hard work continued for 25 years at B.F. Goodrich, where he retired as a supervisor in 1998.
Joseph was a man of many talents and passions. He found joy in crafting with stained glass and decorating Russian-styled Easter eggs, showcasing his creativity and love for art.
Joseph is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Margie Ann (nee Herbert); daughters Jean (Charles) Gerth, Mary Ann Schaefer, and Patricia Super, all of Lorain; seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, John Yavornitzky, Andrew Yavornitzky, William Yavornitzky, Michael Yavornitzky, and Harry Yavornitzky, and sisters, Olga Yavornitzky, Eva Jankowski, and Anne Yavornitzky.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral and Cremation Specialists, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by mass at 10:00 a.m. St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 309 W. 7th Street, Lorain. Rev. Daniel O. Divis, pastor,r will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain, with military honors presented by Amvets Post 32.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Lorain County Office of the Aging, 534 S. Abbe Rd., Elyria, OH 44035. Joseph was so grateful to them for their home meals program, or you can contribute in honor of his beloved wife to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3 Summit Park Dr., #500, Independence, OH 44131.
