Joy Ashmus (nee Hoffner), born April 26th, 1935, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 9th after a brief battle with cancer.
Born in Amherst, OH, Joy spent most of her life here except for the 20 years that she spent raising her family in Cherry Hill, NJ. There, she volunteered to work with New Jersey State Psychiatric Hospital at Ancora and positively changed the lives of many.
Upon returning to Ohio, Joy began a career in real estate, and continued to volunteer to help others in need. Joy was an exceptional mother, friend, and caregiver. Nothing gave her greater purpose than to be of service to others. As was the tradition in her family - "Joy could bake with the best of them" - her pies and holiday confections were nonpareil. She will be missed by many.
Her greatest and most fulfilling role was that of mother, grandmother and aunt. She leaves behind her children, David R. Scoco (Priscilla) of Lake Forest, IL, Allison P. Hager of Amherst, OH and Alan C. Scoco (Kisty) of Avon, OH. "Gram" (Bucky) will forever be loved, cherished and remembered by her beloved grandchildren; Dr. Aleka Scoco, Anton Scoco, Chandler Scoco, and Kyle Hager. "Aunt Joy" was special to all her nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cleveland Center for Sight and Easter Seals of Northern Ohio in her memory. Arrangements are entrusted to Dovin Funeral and Cremation Specialists, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. To send online condolences go to
