Julia B. Gdovin (nee Slusny), 96, of Sheffield Village, passed away Sunday, January 11, 2015 at Avon Oaks Nursing Home, following a lengthy illness.
Born May 10, 1918 in Cleveland, she moved to Lorain and married George J. Gdovin in 1937. Julia and George owned and operated two grocery and meat markets.
Julia enjoyed playing cards, Scrabble, embroidery, working on word search puzzles and writing poetry. Julia was a member of the Poetry Association having had some of her poems published.
Julia was a member of the former Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Lorain and a member of St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church, Sheffield Village.
Surviving are her two daughters, Germaine DeChant of Sheffield Village, with whom she lived with for 10 years, and Georgetta (Jerry) Jungbluth of Wellington; 6 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 1 great great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, George J. Gdovin in 1989; parents, Mark and Theresa (nee Misenko) Slusny; a sister, Theresa Hoffman; a brother, Joseph Slusny; her son-in-law, Chuck DeChant; and a grandson, David DeChant in 2011.
The family wished to extend their sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff for the excellent care and compassion given to Julia throughout her stay at Avon Oaks Porter Pavilion.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4:00 - 7:00 pm in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Thursday at 9:30 am in the funeral home followed by mass at 10:00 am at St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church, 1878 Abbe Road, Sheffield Village. Rev. Edward J. Smith, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
