Julio Zavala Sr., 88, of Lorain, passed away Saturday, January 17, 2015 at University Hospital Elyria Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
Born Feb. 17, 1926 in Escalon, California, he came to Lorain in 1948 and has lived here since.
Julio worked 33 years at the Lorain Ford Assembly Plant as a welder, retiring in 1991. Prior to this he worked in the navel shipyard in New Jersey and Lake Terminal Railroad in Lorain.
He was member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain, and the United Auto Workers Union Local 425.
Surviving is his wife of 64 years, Gabina Candelaria (nee Balbuena); a son, Julio Zavala Jr., of Sarasota, Florida; daughters, Gloria (Jorge Flores) Zavala of Lorain, Yolanda (Michael) Dudek of Eastpointe, Michigan, and Amparo Portillo of Dearborn, Michigan; 7 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; and a sister.
He was preceded in death by his son, Javier Zavala in 1993; and his parents, Leopold and Apolonia (nee Fuentes) Zavala; and 4 sisters.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10:30 am in the funeral home followed by mass at 11:00 am at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Avenue, Lorain. Rev. William Thaden, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
