Kathleen "Katie" Gerek, (nee Kudlo), 64, of Lorain, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at Mercy Regional Medical Center, Lorain, following a lengthy illness.
Born March 16, 1947 in Lorain, where she was a life long resident.
Katie was the first female cab driver in Lorain. She also worked as a dispatcher for the cab company for many years, and at various manufacturing jobs and tended bar.
She was a member of the former St. Joseph Catholic Church, Lorain. Katie loved crocheting and Swedish weaving, having made many scarf's and afghans that she donated to anyone in need and gave to friends and family. She enjoyed bowling, playing bingo and Pogo.
Surviving is her husband of 15 years and companion of over 40 years, John S, "Time Keeping John": sons, Dennis Rourke of Elyria and Ronald Smith of Kingman, Az.; a daughter, Angie (Frank) Patten-Joplin of Mt. Washington, Ky; grandchildren, Brianne, David, Dana, Dean, Ashley, Amanda, Bianca, and Heather; great grandson, Anthony.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph F. in 1967 and Virginia M. (nee Leshinski) Kudlo in 1982; and her brother, Joseph Kudlo in 2007.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain, where services will be held at 8:30 pm. Deacon Luis Maldonado, will officiate.
