Lenzie "Mason" West, age 75, of Lorain, died Wednesday, February 27, 2008, at Amherst Manor Retirement Community, after a long battle with cancer.
He was born on June 23, 1932, in Calhoun County, West Virginia. After serving his country in the United States Army, he moved his family to Lorain in 1958, where he has resided for the rest of his life. He enlisted in the Army in 1952 and served until 1954, receiving the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
Mason was employed at US Steel, working in the coupling shop, until he retired in 1985. He was a member of the Murray Ridge Road Church of God in Elyria. He enjoyed gardening and was an avid outdoors man.
Mason is survived by his sons; Marvin, of San Diego, CA and Michael, of Lorain, his daughter, Melissa Swetz, of Amherst, 8 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and 2 brothers; Hartis West and Benjamin Smith West, both of West Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma (nee Toler), his parents; Seldon and Ivy West, a granddaughter, Melissa, and several siblings.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 2, from 2 - 5 pm, in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where services will be held the following morning at 10:00 am. The Rev. Thom W. Cody, Pastor of Murray Ridge Road Church of God, will officiate. Burial with full military honors, will follow, at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
