Leo R. Karwatske, 87 of Grafton, passed away Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at his residence while under the care of New Life Hospice following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Connorsville, Penn., to the late Rudy and Esther (nee Cunningham) Karwatske. Leo moved to Lorain in 1945, then to Grafton in 1974 where he has lived since.
Leo served with the 47th Infantry Regiment in the 9th Division of the US Army during World War II. He received the Army of Occupation Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
A very hard worker, Leo spent 40 years in construction until his retirement in 1978. He had enjoyed raising beef cattle, woodworking and deer hunting.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy (nee Laporte); sons, Dwayne (Anita) Harmon of Lorain, and Rick (Sue) Harmon of Elyria; a grandson, Coy Harmon of Elyria; and a brother, Charles "Chick" Karwatske of Uniontown, Penn.
Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Fritz, Butch, Jimmy; twin brothers, Edward and Calvin; and a sister, Mildred.
Graveside services will be Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at 1:00 pm at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Avon. Rev. Charles Keesee, pastor of Midway Baptist Church, will officiate. The Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 will conduct full military honors. The Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain, is handling the arrangements.
