Leroy J. "Red" DeCarlo

Leroy J. "Red" DeCarlo, age 85, of Huron, formerly of Lorain, died on Monday, August 17, 2009 at Firelands Hospital, Sandusky, of natural causes.
He was born on December 20, 1923 in North East, Pennsylvania, moving to Lorain as a young child where he has spent most of his life.
He is a 1942B graduate of Lorain High School.
Leroy served in the United States Navy from 1942-1945, was in PT Boats and Submarines. After the Navy, he sailed the Great Lakes for about a year, as a seaman.
He was employed as a master electrician at Ford Motor Plant for 30 years, retiring in 1986. Prior to this he worked in the shipyards as an electrician until he went to work at Ford. He was one of the first employees at the Lorain Ford Plant when it opened. "Red" also owned DeCarlo Builders.
He was a member of the American Legion in Huron and Ford Local #2000.
Leroy was an avid hunter, and really enjoyed fishing. He enjoyed doing oil paintings, as well as working in his garden and yard. He always looked forward to spending the winter months in Florida. He completed building an airplane in 1968, and enjoyed R. C. planes.
He is survived by his sons, John (Mollie) DeCarlo, of Amherst, Tom (Carole) DeCarlo, of Lorain, daughters, Bonnie Zavell, of Elyria and Kathleen DeCarlo of Malibu, CA, 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, sister, Helen Lou Glass, of Sheffield Township.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Nelcie R. (nee White) in 1999, his parents, Charles and Helen (nee Tellis) DeCarlo, sister, Marie Meckley, and brothers, Charles, Jack and Chuck.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 20, 2009, from 7-9 p.m. at Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Visitation and funeral services will also be held on Friday from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. at Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon.
