TAUGHT 100,000 TO SWIM
Louis Monos, 95 of Lorain, died Thursday, March 31, 2005 at Marymount Hospital in Garfield Heights following a brief illness.
He was born March 12, 1910 in Lorain, Ohio A graduate of Lorain High School in 1930-A, he was active in sports though his high school years, and was enshrined in the Lorain Sports Hall of Fame in 1976.
For 45 years, Monos taught swimming to over 100,000 people as Lorain YMCA physical and aquatic director. In 1959 he brought the first Ohio-West Virginia basketball championship to Lorain and in 1961 the first wrestling championship. He organized the summer Red Cross swimming classes at Lakeview Park and taught wrestling, judo, gymnastics, basketball and all physical education sports.
He served three years as DeMolay sports commissioner for Lorain County in basketball and softball.
Monos organized Lorain Senior Fellowship Club, Young Peoples Athletic Program at Hungarian Reformed Church and supervised the Lorain Police Department's basketball program at Hungarian Reformed Church. In 1954, he was presented a Boy Scout Award for teaching Scouts, over a quarter of a century, to swim. In 1959, he received the "Hats Off" award and for many years held the outstanding swimming program award for the YMCA's progressive swim methods in the Ohio-West Virginia Area. Following his retirement from the YMCA in 1970, he served as a Deputy Sheriff under Vernon Smith and worked for the Lorain County Road Department. He had also served as a trustee for Sheffield Township.
He enjoyed gardening and took special pride in his rose garden. He was member and very active in his church, the Hungarian Reformed United Church of Christ, Lorain, and was still collecting the offerings until recently. He was a 32nd degree Mason.
Surviving are his two daughters, Carole Smith and Lois Masin both of Lorain, he has six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose in 1988; brothers, David, Charles, and Gilbert; sisters, Mary Balogh, Julia Kopervas and Sophie Beresczky.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain, where funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m., with the Rev. Zoltan S. Kelemen, pastor, officiating.
Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
