Luis R, Cruz, 78, of Lorain, died Saturday, October 21, 2006 in the emergency room of Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center West, Lorain, following a sudden illness.
He was born September 9, 1928 in Coamo, Puerto Rico. He lived in New York, New Jersey and Florida before coming to Lorain over 55 years ago.
He worked as a balancer and utility man for Ford Motor Company, Brookpark, Ohio Plant for 31 years, retiring in 1981. Prior to that he worked for the railroad.
He was member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain, and the United Auto Workers Union Local 1250. He a founding member of Club Coameno, and was a founding member of the Puerto Rican Home, where he served as president from 1956 thru 1966. He received a congressional certificate of special recognition for meeting the needs of the Puerto Rican community from 1947 thru 1967.
He enjoyed gardening, baseball and walking. He also helped organized the start of fast pitch softball league and several teams at Oakwood Park in Lorain and coached the Coamo fast pitch softball team.
Surviving is his wife of 13 years, Anna M. Cruz (nee Sepulvida); his sons, Luis Cruz of Vermilion, Arturo "Tito" Cruz of Lorain, and Roberto "Bobbie" Cruz of Lorain; his daughters, Nancy Molina of Lorain, Carmen Cruz of Lorain, and Joann Cato Cruz of Lorain; his step sons, Paul Flores Jr. of Elyria, Dennis Flores of Lorain, and Johnny Flores of Lorain; his step daughters, Mary Flores of Lorain, Grace Carlson of North Ridgeville; 15 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; brothers, Roberto Guzman of Villalba, Puerto Rico, Luis F. Ralat of Villalba, Puerto Rico, and Reynaldo Ralat of Lorain; sisters, Carmen M. Perez of Newark, New Jersey, and Gloria Colon of Guayama, Puerto Rico.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Guadalupe Barrio Cruz in 1989, and Carmen (nee Rivas) Cruz in 1997; a brother, Oscar Ralat in 1973.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. The family will also receive friends on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of mass at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Ave., Lorain. Rev. Fr. William Thaden, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon, Ohio.
