Luis Rodriguez Delgado

Luis Rodriguez Delgado, 90, of Lorain, died Friday, October 17, 2008 at Autumn Aegis Nursing Home, Lorain, following a lengthy illness
Born Feb 2, 1918 in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, Luis was one amongst a group of 500 Puerto Ricans recruited to come to Lorain, in 1948 to work at Lorain Works U.S. Steel. His home became an essential stopping place for other Puerto Ricans that were to follow. Luis was also very handy and mechanically minded. In the home he repaired all that broke. He passed these skills on to his offspring. He tried very hard to give his family a good life.
After retiring from U.S. Steel he returned to his place of birth, Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. From high atop the mountain where he lived he could see the Puerto Rican coastline and the Caribbean Sea. His property was abundant with tropical birds and foliage which he very much enjoyed. There he worked the land and grew platanos, guineos verdes, and malanga among other roots and vegetables. Besides gardening, he also enjoyed fishing. Every day after lunch he would take his nap on his favorite hamaca. He was a devout Christian and would read the Holy Scriptures on a daily basis. He was a member of Templo Bethel in Lorain. His life slowed down some after falling from a Pana Tree at the age of 78.
Surviving are his loving children, Angel Luis Delgado, Thomas Delgado, Joseph Delgado, Mary I. Diaz, and Dolores Hamilton all of Lorain; 14 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and 4 great great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Pedro Delgado and Dolores Rodriguez; 6 brothers, 4 sisters and a grandson.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 9:00 am until the time of memorial services at 12:00 pm in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Rev. Hector Lopez, pastor of Templo Bethel, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp.
