Mae Rafferty, (nee Bennett), 84, of Lorain, died Friday, October 24, 2008 at her residence while under the care of New Life Hospice following a lengthy illness.
Born May 20, 1924 in Curwensville, PA; she lived in Cambria, NY and Great Valley, NY before coming to Lorain in 1995.
She served in the Women's Army Corp during World War II, receiving the American Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Meritorious Unit Service Plaque.
She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, and the ladies auxiliary of the VFW in Curwensville. Wava was a homemaker, having worked as a waitress and nurse's aid. She enjoyed cooking.
Surviving are her children, Ann Spaeth and Mary Tornabene both of Elyria, George of North Ridgeville, and Patrick of Avon; 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; sister, Sally Sommers of Hermitage, PA, Adeline Dudek of Cambria, NY, Marie Bennett of Gaithersburg, MD, and Mary Ellen Singleton of Curwensville, PA.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Anthony in 1998; a son, David in 1982; parents, David Bennett and Wava (nee Jones) Bennett; and a brother, James.
A memorial mass will be Friday, October 31, 2008 at 10:00 am at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Elyria. Interment will be in St. Bonaventure Catholic Church Cemetery in Pennsylvania at a later date. The Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain is handling the arrangements.
