Maria Elizabeth Kupczynski, (nee Urkiv), age 99, of Lorain, died on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 at Avon Oaks Nursing Home, Avon, following a brief illness.
She was born on November 2, 1906 in Strij, Ukraine. After graduating college she taught elementary school in the vicinity of Horochiv in Volyn, Ukraine. During World War II, she resided for several years in Sosnovyec, Poland, prior to emigrating to Munich, Germany. She came to Lorain in 1947 where she resided for the remainder of her life.
She was an accomplished seamstress working for several clothiers including Joseph & Feiss.
She was an active member of St. John Ukrainian Catholic Church, where she taught Ukrainian in the Parish Saturday School. She was a member of the Ukrainian Women's Club, Soyuz Ukrainok
She is survived by a older sister: Cecelia DeBoylo of North Plainfield, New Jersey, nephew: Jarema (Jerry) Kupchynsky of East Brunswick, NJ, niece: Kristina Pavlak, of Piscataway, New Jersey, a great-niece and several great grand nieces and grand nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Roman in 1971 and sister: Victoria in the Ukraine.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 26, 2006 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where a Panakhyda service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home followed by a 10:00 a.m. Divine Liturgy at St. John Ukrainian Byzantine Catholic Church, Lorain. Rev. Fr. Steve Paliwoda, will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
