Mariano "El Lobo" Cruz Gutierrez, 95, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, November 13, 2014, surrounded by loved ones.
Born October 22, 1919 in Humacao, Puerto Rico, he came to Lorain in 1952.
He had worked in a greenhouse, for the B & O Railroad, and retired from the Lorain Water Plant on January 15, 1989.
Mariano was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel. He enjoyed playing dominos and pool. He was an avid gardener and fisherman and loved music, dancing, baseball games and spending time with his grandkids and best friend, Miguel Berlingeri.
Surviving are his sons, Guadalupe "Lupe" Villegas of Saginaw, MI, Luis Marin Cruz, Jose "Qui Que" Gutierrez both of Lorain; daughters, Ignacia "Anna" Cruz, Juanita Gutierrez Davis, Cristella "Cuca" Gutierrez all of Lorain, "Papa was a rolling stone, where they lay their head at, another is born" and a granddaughter, Ida Luz Villegas; 53 grandchildren, 116 great grandchildren and 66 great great-grandchildren; sisters, Maria Soleda Gutierrez of Baltimore, Theofila Gutierrez of Humacao, Puerto Rico; a brother, Sergio Gutierrez of Lorain; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Isabel Villegas (nee Valdes) Gutierrez in 2006; his parents, Antonio and Vicenta (nee Cordova) Gutierrez; his children, Bienvenida Rosario, Augustine Cruz, Epifanio "Cuchie" Gutierrez, Edwin Gutierrez, Gabriel, Alberto "Cookie" Gutierrez; brothers, Bernabe Gutierrez and Luis Cruz-Gutierrez; sisters, Lydia Gutierrez, Inez Gutierrez, Zolia Gutierrez, Valentina Gutierrez and 5 other brothers
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where funeral services will be Friday at 8:45 am followed by mass at 9:30 am at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Avenue, Lorain. Rev. William Thaden, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
