Mary Iwasyszyn-Evans, (nee Wolobuyiw) 87, of Naples, Florida and formerly of Lorain, entered eternal rest on Saturday, March 23, 2013 under the care of Avow Hospice in Naples, Florida.
She was born on June 6, 1925 in Husariwka, Kharkiv Region of Ukraine to the late Anna (Lariwna) and Artem Wolobuyiw. As a child she survived the Holodomor of 1932-1933, the planned starvation/genocide that Stalin perpetrated against the Ukrainian people. Like many of her peers, she was forced to leave her homeland during the Second World War. She met and married Peter Iwasyszyn-Evans in Braunschweig, Germany, where they lived in a Displaced Persons camp before immigrating with there eldest son Jerry to Lorain, Ohio, in 1950 and continued to raise their additional children, daughter: Natalie and son: Eugene and participate in the Ukrainian community.
She worked for and was a honorary member of the John R. Dovin Funeral Home and family for many years and ended a 15 year career as the chief cook for Rev. Thomas Rath and Rev. Lawrence Martello at St. John Roman Catholic Church, Lorain, retiring in 1990. She was well known for her wonderful cooking and baking abilities.
She was an active member of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, Lorain, and the Ukrainian National Women's League of America.
Besides her parents Artem and Anna, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Peter, in November of 2000; and a brother, Andrij.
She will be sadly missed by her sons, Jerry (Cheryl) Evans of Lorain, Dr. Eugene (Renee) Evans of Lynn Haven, FL; a daughter, Natalie (John) Santarsiero of Naples, FL; she is the loving grandmother of Gerald (Lisa) Evans of Lorain, Dr. Jason Evans of Fort Lauderdale, FL and Jennifer (James) Polenske of North Ridgeville; beloved great grandmother of Lauren Evans, Zachary Evans, Lindsey Evans, Jessica Polenske, Jordan Polenske and Joseph Polenske.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 10th from 4:00 to 8:00 pm with a panachida at 6:00 pm in Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Thursday, April 11th at 9:30 am in the funeral home followed by Divine Liturgy at 10:00 am at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, E. 31st St. and Charleston Ave., Lorain. The Very Reverend Canon Stephen M. Paliwoda, pastor will officiate. Entombment will follow in the Resurrection Mausoleum of Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
