Mary Novak (nee Belovics) died January 15, 2008 at home and under the care of The Hospice of the Cleveland Clinic, following a short illness.
She was born on May 23, 1923 in Mikohaza, Hungary, emigrated to the United States in 1938 and became an American citizen in 1945.
Mary grew up in an agricultural background and brought with her the values of a strong work ethic, a sense of responsibility and a keen understanding of thrift and education. We were proud of mom for assimilating into her new country, learning the language, customs, the art of negotiating, working hard and smart and instilling her values to her children. She maintained close ties with her heritage as a member of St. Ladislaus Church, St. Michael Byzantine Church, and the Hungarian community. Her reputation for preparing Hungarian recipes was well known. When mom indicated she would be making kifles, nut rolls, dobos torte as well as Hungarian stuffed peppers and cabbage, friends and relatives eagerly awaited the call.
Mary also enjoyed travel, quilt making, landscaping, assisting with the activities of her church and wintering in their Ft. Myers condo.
She is survived by Alex, her husband of sixty-one years; her son, Alex (Walli) of Sylvania, OH; daughter, Jane of Poulsbo, WA; son, Kenneth of MA; grandchildren, Trent and Cara Novak of Sylvania; nieces and nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Barbara (nee Cirbus) Belovics; brothers, Michael, John, Nick; sister, Ethel and infant granddaughter, Caroline Novak.
Calling hours will be held Saturday, January 19, 2008 from 10AM until the time of service, 12 PM at Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Father James Schmitz, of St. Ladislaus, will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
