Mercedes Ortiz Alvarado, age 94, of Lorain, died on Monday, December 13, 2004 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain, following a short illness.
She was born on February 13, 1910 in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico, moving to Lorain 50 years ago.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain, where she was a member of the Legion of Mary and the Cursillo Movement.
Mercedes enjoyed gardening, growing roses, sewing, crocheting, knitting, cooking and helping her neighbors.
She is survived by her sons: Juan Calixto Ortiz, of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Juan De Dios Vasquez, Juan L. Saul Ortiz and Rev. Deacon Juan Roque Ortiz, all of Lorain, a daughter: Francisca Josefa Ortiz, of Lorain, 21 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren and sister Josefa Santiago of Lorain.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years: Simon V. Ortiz in 1973, sister: Carmen Ortiz, brother: Juan Pablo Alvarado and 3 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 16, 2004 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Friends may also call on Friday, Dec. 17, 2004 from 9:00 until time of Mass at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Avenue, Lorain. Most Rev. Bishop A. James Quinn, and Rev. Fr. William Thaden, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
