Michael E. Smith Sr., 58 of Lorain, died Sunday, December 25, 2011 at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Born January 20, 1953 in Mansfield, he moved to Lorain in 1976. In 1993 he moved to Florida where he resided before returning to Lorain in 2006. Michael served in the US Navy in the 1970's.
Michael worked for Carl Spaur Basement Repair for 20 years. During this time, he also worked at Lorain Works US Steel as a crane operator for 5 years.
He was a former member of the American Legion Post 30, and enjoyed mechanics, hunting, and loved fixing things.
Surviving is his former wife, Darleen Smith Erwin of Palmetto, Fla.; sons, William T. (Heather) Smith Sr. of Bradenton, Fla., and Michael E. (Joan) Smith Jr. of Springhill, Fla.; grandchildren, William Jr., Jena, and Chleo; step grandchildren, Tyler, Nathan, Ellexus, and Alyssa; a brother, Stewart of Mansfield; and a sister, Connie Mullins of Mansfield.
Private services for the family will be held at a later date. The Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue., Lorain, is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the Cancer Center at Mercy Foundation of Lorain County, 3700 Kolbe Road, Lorain, Ohio 44053.
