Michael "Sarge" Vorkavich, age 91, of Lorain, past on Monday, July 11, 2005 at Ohio Extended Care Center, Lorain, following a short illness.
He was born on August 5, 1913 in Lorain, where he has lived his entire life.
He served in the United States Army during World War II from 1940 to 1945 as a sergeant in the 27th Signal Corp. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, 2 bronze stars, and the bronze star medal.
Michael was employed 27 years at the Lorain Works US Steel, retiring in 1979.
He was a member of St. Mark's Serbian Orthodox Church, Sheffield Lake. He was also a life long member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post #451 of Lorain, and United Steel Workers Union Local #1104.
He enjoyed fishing, golfing and traveling.
He is survived by his step daughter, Mary Clark of North Olmstead, 2 grandchildren, two sisters: Martha Ralich, of Lorain and Mary Cica, of North Royalton, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Vorkavich (nee Fowles), in 1979, parents: Dane and Anka (nee Vladic) Vorkavich, brothers: Nicholas, Wasil, Rudy, Milan and Eli, sisters: Mildred Bednarik, Sophia Bunevich, Agnes Malakar and Dorothy Vorkavich.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 14, 2005 from 5-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where a parastas service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Services will be Friday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mark Serbian Orthodox Church, 1434 Lake Breeze Road, Sheffield Village, OH. Rev. Fr. Gavrilo Savich, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Mark Cemetery, Sheffield Village. The Veterans of Foreign War Post #451 will conduct full military honors.
