Nicholas Kaczay, 90, a life long resident of Elyria, died Monday, January 3, 2011 at New Life Hospice Residential Center, Lorain, following a short illness.
He was born June 2, 1920 in Elyria to the late Basil and Anna (nee Mazurik) Kaczay.
Nicholas served in the US Army during World War II with the 5th Armored Division, 552nd Tank Battalion.
A carpenter by trade, Nicholas was the co-owner of Kaczay Brothers Builders of Elyria, retiring in 1982 after 45 years.
Nicholas was a founding member and builder of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Elyria. He enjoyed gardening and fixing things. For 35 years, he enjoyed going to McDonalds on Middle Ridge Road every morning to meet with his friends.
Surviving are his daughters, Dianna Kaczay of Columbus, and Denise Kaczay of Elyria; brothers, Walt, Andy and Ted all of Elyria, and Steven of Wellington; sisters, Olga Slanczka of Elyria, and Sophie Habeck of Sullivan.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Regina T. (nee Zarachowicz) in 2001; a brother, Will; and sisters, Catherine Gradish and Mary Kaczay.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where funeral services will be Friday at 9:00 am followed by Mass at 9:30 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 41295 North Ridge Road, Elyria. Rev. Fr. Gaetano Menegatto, CSJ, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. The Disabled American Veterans, Louis Pall Proy Chapter 20, will conduct military honors.
