Norbert R. "Nubby" Welter, 91, native of Lorain, and current resident of Pensacola, Florida, passed away Sunday, September 21, 2008 at Sacred Heart Hospital, in Pensacola.
Norbert was the fourth child born to Matthew and Rose (nee Webber) Welter in Lorain on December 21, 1916. He attended St. Joseph's Parochial School, Hawthorne Jr. High School and graduated from Lorain High School in 1934. Later in life he attended Navy Electronics School at Texas A & M and the Radio & TV School in Lorain.
He served his country in the United States Navy as a Yoeman Chief actively from 1942 to 1963 and as a reserve from 1963 to 1972. While in the US Navy, Norbert participated in both the European and Pacific Theaters during World War II. Prior to entering the Navy, he was employed at the National Tube, Division of US Steel in Lorain.
After retiring from the US Navy, Norbert worked for the Nickel Plate RR and from 1964 to 1979 was employed as a mail clerk at the US Post Office in Lorain, also serving as the president of the postal worker's union. In his retirement, he continued working on a part- time basis for SBS Bus Service, Cleveland Plant & Flower and for a local security service in Lorain.
As a youth, Norbert attended St. Joseph's Church where he was a mass server and sang in the children's and men's choirs. He was an active parishioner at St. Anthony's Church in Lorain, serving as a parish usher and worked with the parish's credit union. Since 1993 Norbert has been a parishioner of St. Anne's Church in Pensacola.
Norbert married Betty Carney on September 27, 1947 at St. Anthony's Church in Lorain. Last year they celebrated their joyous 60th wedding anniversary at a party held for them at their daughter Bonnie's home in Elyria, Ohio.
Norbert Welter is survived by his wife, Betty, his daughters, Bonnie Hite (James) of Elyria and Nancy Zipp (Scott) of Amherst, his sons, Robert Welter of Brooklyn, New York and Thomas Welter (Josie) of Pensacola, Florida. He is also survived by his older sister, Louise and a younger brother, Ralph, eight grandchildren and six great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by their daughter, Gail, in 1975, his brother, Jerome, and his sister Edna.
The family will receive friends at the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain on Wednesday, September 24, 2008 from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home followed by Mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. Joseph West, OFM, Conv., Pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery with military honors by the US Navy and DAV chapter #20.
