Olga M. Mihalic, (nee Kimmel), 81, of Amherst, passed away Thursday, January 1, 2009, at Community Regional Medical Center, Lorain following a brief illness.


Born April 5, 1927, in Lorain, Olga graduated from Lorain High School in 1945B and attended Lorain Business College. She had been a resident of Amherst since 1976 and a long-time winter resident of Ft. Myers, FL.


Olga has been the co-owner of Mihalic Properties Inc. since 1970. Prior to that, she worked as a private secretary at Fruehauf, Lorain, for many years.


Olga was a member of St. Vitus Catholic Church, Lorain, then of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Amherst, the Auxiliary Knights of St. John Drill Team, Vermilion Boat Club, American Croatian Club, Lorain, Senior Citizens of Amherst, and Altrusa International.


Olga and her husband Bill founded the William A. and Olga M. Mihalic Scholarship Fund at Clearview High School. Olga loved to travel, having visited Croatia, Yugoslavia, Holland and Ireland. To celebrate her 80th birthday and 50th wedding anniversary, she traveled in 2007 with her entire family on an Alaskan cruise. She and her husband also enjoyed boating together, completing trips through four of the Great Lakes and the Trent Severn Waterway Canal.


After being diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome in the fall of 1999, Olga volunteered to assist others in the rehabilitation of their condition.


Surviving is her husband of 51 years, William "Bill"; daughters, Toni (Larry) Watson of Hudson, Berni (David) Mast of Avon, and Kathi (Scot) Bartholomew of Amherst; 9 grandchildren, and a brother, Albert Kimmel of Avon Lake.


She was preceded in death by her parents, Anthony Kimmel in 1973, and Carolina (nee Holzl) Kimmel in 1986; and a sister, Helen Vrabel in 1995.


The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 4th from 1:00 - 3:00 and 6:00 - 8:00 pm in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where funeral services will be Monday at 9:15 am followed by mass at 10:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Dr., Amherst. Olga's nephew, Rev. Fr. George Vrabel, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp.
