Pedro F. "Poncho" Flores, age 78, of Lorain, died on Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center West, following a short illness.
Born October 19, 1925 in Caguas, Puerto Rico, he came to Lorain in 1950 and has lived here since.
He worked at Lorain Works US Steel for 33 years, retiring in 1982, and, at the same time, he worked at the former St. Joseph Hospital, Lorain in the housekeeping department for 20 years.
He was an active member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain, where he had served as Eucharistic Minister, Usher and Altar Server. He was also a member of the churchs Curcillo Movement and the St. Vincent De Paul Society. He was a member of the United Steel Workers Union Local 1104.
In 1997, Congressman Sherrod Brown awarded Pedro with a Certificate of Special Recognition from the Congress of the United States House of Representatives for the 50th anniversary celebration of Puerto Rican community in Lorain. He was thanked for bringing his rich and proud heritage to Lorain, and for his commitment, involvement, and contributions which have helped make Lorain, Ohio and the United States a better place to live.
He enjoyed spending time at church, helping with all church activities.
He is survived by his sons: Pedro J. Flores, of Lorain, Timothy Flores of Nashua, New Hampshire, daughters: Maria T. Rodriguez, of Amherst, Maria S. Flores, of Gallipolis, Maria S. Flores of Jefferson, OH, Rosemary Ortiz, of Neptune, NJ, Denise Thorne, and Patricia Flores, both of Lorain, and Teresa Serrano, of Elyria, 25 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and several brothers and sisters.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years: Teresa (nee DeJesus) in 1998, sons: Fred, Cyprian, and Matthew, and several brothers and sisters.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain, where a prayer service will be at 7:00 p.m. conducted by Deacon Jose Flores, brother of Pedro. The family will also receive friends on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until the time of mass at 8:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Avenue, Lorain. Rev. Fr. William Thaden, pastor, and Mr. Jose Flores, deacon, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain
