Peter J. Cherubini, 84, of Vermilion Twp, died Monday, May 4, 2009 at his residence.
He was born June 19, 1924 in Lorain; he lived in Huron for 2 years before moving to Vermilion Twp in 2002. In his youth, Peter played football for City Field in the Lorain City Bantam League as quarterback, leading the league in touchdowns for 2 consecutive years. He attended St. Mary High School in Lorain until his senior year when he was drafted into the US Army in 1943. He completed 66 combat missions as a ball turret gunner and staff sergeant. He then served in the US Air Force as a staff sergeant in the 401st Bombardment Group, flying aboard the aircraft "Hells Angels". Peter participated in the battles and campaigns of Central Europe, Rhineland and Ardennes. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Legion of Merit, Silver Star Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross Ribbon, Soldiers Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, American Defense and Theater Ribbons, Asiatic-Pacific and European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Theater Ribbons, three Bronze Stars and a Silver Battle Star, Air Medal with four Bronze and one Silver Oak Leaf Clusters, Bronze Arrowhead, and the Philippine Liberation and Defense Ribbons. While in the service, Peter also played semi-professional baseball and basketball on his own time.
Following the service, Peter managed bowling alleys in Lorain, Amherst, Vermilion and Sheffield Lake. He then owned and operated Over the Road Auto Parts for 14 years, before retiring 10 years ago. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 7576 in Vermilion, and was an avid bowler, bowling several 300 games and had won numerous championships.
Surviving are his sisters, Frances (Ray) Hilko of Lorain, and Arlene (Bob) Dinallo of Avon; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Margaret (nee Rufo) Cherubini; and a sister, Mary Ann Gintonio in 1977.
Full military honors will be conducted at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at 12:30 pm. The Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain in handling the services. To send online condolences go to
