Rafael Maldonado

Rafael Maldonado, a beloved member of the community, passed away on September 1, 2023, at the age of 84.

Born to a large family on November 17, 1938, in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, to Daniel Maldonado and Primitiva Diaz, Rafael was one of twenty-four children.  He lived in Puerto Rico for 16 years before moving to New York City where he resided for 56 years.  

Rafael dedicated his life to The Alden, where he worked as a doorman for an incredible 33 years. He greeted residents and visitors with a warm smile and kind heart. His presence at The Alden created a sense of camaraderie and made it feel like a true home for all who entered its doors.

Outside of work, Rafael had a variety of hobbies and interests that brought him great joy. He loved to play cards, bet on horses, try his luck with the lotto, watch baseball games, and enjoy cartoons. He also enjoyed savoring a glass of cognac while sharing funny stories with friends as well as playing "Topo."

Rafael's dedication extended beyond his work and personal interests; he was deeply committed to his family. He is survived by his loving wife Carmen (nee Guzman) Maldonado, who stood by him through thick and thin; daughters: Isabel Villanueva, Margarita Rivera, and Gina Maldonado-Powers; many grandchildren as well as his siblings: Abraham Maldonado, Ana Maria Diaz, and Alicia "Carmen" Maldonado

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mildred Otero; both of his parents as well as twenty brothers and sisters.

The legacy Rafael leaves behind is one filled with warmth, laughter, and compassion. His infectious smile brightened the lives of those around him. Whether it was a simple greeting at The Alden or sharing a laugh with his loved ones, he had an innate ability to bring laughter into any situation.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 6 from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. at Dovin Funeral & Cremation Specialists, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain.  Rev. Helena Gonzalez will officiate.  Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
