** Raymond W. Bobak, Silver Star Medal Recipient and Ford Retiree **
Raymond W. Bobak, age 65, of Lorain, died on Monday, July 13, 2009 at New Life Hospice Residential Center, Lorain, following a lengthy illness.
He was born January 29, 1944 in Elyria, Ohio. He was a lifelong resident of Lorain, Ohio.
Mr. Bobak was one of twenty students picked for vocational welding in the twelfth grade, graduating from Lorain High School in 1962.
He was employed by the Ford Motor Company's Lorain Assembly Plant for thirty years as an arc and gas welder repairman, retiring July 1, 1992. He was a member of United Auto Workers Union, Local 425.
Mr. Bobak was sent to Vietnam in 1969 as an M-60 Machine Gunner in the First Marine Division, United States Marine Corps. After one of his combat actions, he was decorated with the Silver Star Medal by the President of the United States. This same action also earned him the Purple Heart citation. He also received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal with one star, Vietnamese Campaign Medal with a Device Medal, and the Combat Action Medal.
In his free time, he enjoyed computers and alternative energy engineering.
Mr. Bobak was preceded in death by his mother, Gertrude Bobak Given (nee Solomon), in 1993. Survivors include his sister, Vilma Dechant (nee Bobak), retired nurse, of Lorain, and a nephew, Erich Merkle, a psychologist of Stow.
No funeral service or visitation will be held. Because of his Silver Star Medal is one of the military's highest decorations, Mr. Bobak will have military honors and burial at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. The Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, is handling his funeral arrangements.
