Richard D. Smith, age 71, of Sheffield Lake, passed away on Wednesday, December 15, 2010, at Mercy Regional Medical Center, Lorain.
He was born on March 1, 1939, in Johnstown, PA, moving to this area in 1948.
He was employed at Republic Technologies as a Group Leader in the #1 castor department for 30 years, before retiring in 2001. Prior to this, he worked for Fruehauf Trailer Company while he also worked at McGarveys, for 11 years.
Richard was a member of the Salvation Army Church, where he was a Corp. Sergeant Major and a member of the Men's Fellowship group. He was also a member of the Steel Workers Union Local 1104.
He enjoyed wood-working and gardening.
Richard is survived by his sons; Gary, David (Krista), and Jason (Deborah), all of Lorain, daughters; Debra (Wayne) Arnett, of Lorain, Kathy (Daniel) Spence, of Sheffield Lake, and Mildred (Eric, Sr.) Hohman, of North Ridgeville, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. He was also survived by his dog, Dolly.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Betty L. (nee Lambert), in 2002, a grandson, David A.H. Smith, Jr., brothers; Victor R., Robert E., and William G. Smith, and sisters; Donna L. Forider and Rose Ann Flowers.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 19, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm, in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where funeral services will be held on Mon. at 11:00 am. The Salvation Army will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp.
