Robert G. Matakovich

Robert G. Matakovich, 76, of Lorain, died Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at his residence following a lengthy illness while under the care of New Life Hospice.


He was born Aug. 15, 1930 in Lorain where he lived his entire life.

He was a 1949 graduate of Lorain High School and served in the US Navy from 1951 through 1953 aboard the USS Landing Ship Medium 398.


Robert worked as a Riger Foreman at Lorain Works US Steel for 37 years retiring in 1986.


He was a member of St. Vitus Croatian Catholic Church, Lorain.


In his formative years, Robert played various sports including 23 years of hockey in Lorain city leagues. He played a dynamic part in his children's sports activities as well as having coached little league baseball for many years. He was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed fishing and boating and having lamb roasts.


Surviving is his wife of 53 years, Loretta (nee Narowski); sons, Robert "Bobby" of Amherst, Martin "Marty" of Bay Village, and John "Johnny" of Lorain; a daughter, Karin Fortner of Amherst, and 9 grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin Matakovich in 1950, and Lottie (nee Gunella) Matakovich in 1965; brothers, John Birich in 1976, and Joseph Matakovich; sisters, Dorothy Salkowitz in 1990, Bertha Lukachko in 1990, Anna Washio in 2004, Mary Booth in 1993 and Barb Klekota.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 4:00 - 7:00 pm in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, with a rosary at 6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Rev. Fr. Simon Nekic, pastor of St. Vitus Croatian Catholic Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain. The Veterans of Foreign War Post 451 and the American Legion Post 30 will conduct full military honors.
