Robert F. "Bob" Wonson, 62, of Shaker Heights, a basketball coach and teacher for over 38 years, died Sunday, March 15, 2009 at University Hospital Cleveland, after complications from colon surgery on March 5th.
He was born June 26, 1946 in Cleveland and graduated from Lakewood High School in 1964. He graduated college from Western Michigan in 1969 and then received his master's degree from Cleveland State in 1979. During that time he taught Social Studies at Lakewood High School and was the assistant varsity basketball coach there. In 1980 he went to Mantua, Ohio where he became the head basketball coach at Crestwood High School. He moved to Pullman, Washington in 1981 to become an assistant coach at Washington State under George Raveling. He followed coach Raveling to the University of Iowa in 1983. Since 1985 he has been a Social Studies teacher and head basketball coach at Shaker Heights High School, missing only his last game due to illness. During his coaching career there, he won 13 Lake Erie League Championships, six district titles and one regional, and in 1999 his team was the Division 1 state runner-up.
He was a member of the Greater Cleveland Basketball Coaches Association and Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association.
He enjoyed basketball, baseball and golfing.
Surviving is his wife of 21 years, Mary Ann (nee Wengryniuk); 2 daughters, Jennifer Sampieri of North Chelmsford, MA, and Sarah Wonson of Hilliard; 2 granddaughters, Liliana and Sofia Sampieri; his mother-in-law, Emily Wengryniuk of Lorain.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Trafton and Faye (nee Wyper) Wonson and a brother, Jack Stamm.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 18, from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. at the Schulte and Mahon-Murphy Funeral Home, 5252 Mayfield Road, Lyndhurst. Funeral services will be Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at East View United Church of Christ, 15615 Chagrin Blvd. Shaker Heights. Rev. Mack Wright, associate pastor will officiate. The Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain is handling the arrangements.
