Stephen Joseph Stetz, 85, of Elyria went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 15, 2010 at the Elyria Memorial Hospital following a short illness. He was born in Dunbar, Pennsylvania on February 23, 1925 to the late Stephen and Anna (nee Cochick) Stetz. One week after graduating from high school he was drafted into the United States Army. He served in the 4th Infantry. During his service he was involved in various campaigns including the Invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. During his years of service he was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. His military service is one thing he was always proud of. After an honorable discharge from the Army he worked for the Lorain Works US Steel as an electrician from which he retired after 30 years. He was an avid Steelers fan and also enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and spending time with his family. He was a life time member of the VFW and American Legion as well as a member of the Eagles and United Steelworkers Union Local #1104.
Surviving are his daughter, Dennice Dillon, and her partner, Jay Richter, of Elyria with whom he made his home. Grandchildren: Lisa Dillon of Lorain, Kimberly Dillon of Avon Lake, Erik Nelson of Junction City, Kansas, Christopher and Candice Nelsen of Michigan, Stephen Stetz, of Vermilion and Lee Ann Joseph of Vermilion. Great Grandchildren, Elizabeth Dillon and Nathan Castro of Lorain, Stephen Nelsen of Junction City Kansas and Stephen Stetz Jr. of Vermilion, sisters, Josephine Pastor of Pennsylvania and Marion Kostelnik of Cleveland. He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years. Joann "Candy" (nee Merkle) in 1995, son, Stephen Stetz, Jr, daughter, Darlene (Donna) Nelsen, brother, Paul Stetz and sister, Madeline Kostelnik.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 18, 2010 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where services will be held on Friday at 9:30 a.m. followed by a 10:00 a.m. mass at Mary Mother of God Parish, 309 W. 7th Street, Lorain. Rev. Fr. James R. Becherer, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park.
