Theodore D. Leonard, age 86, of Amherst, died on Sunday, October 8, 2006 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain.
He was born December 20, 1919 in Lorain, Ohio, where he resided until 1977, when he moved to Amherst.
He graduated from Lorain High School in 1939 and attended Clemson University in 1943 and 1944, during his military training.
As a member of the United States Army Air Corp during World War II, he served with the 525th Bomb Squadron, the 379th Bomb Group, from 1943 to 1945. In recognition of his service, he earned the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 4 bronze stars, and Air Medal with 3 bronze stars, and a Good Conduct Medal.
Following the war, he worked as a pipefitter with American Shiopbuilding and in the construction industry before retiring in 1985. In conjunction with his work, he belonged to Pipefitters Local Union #120.
He was a lifelong member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Lorain, where he was also a member of their Holy Name Society.
He had enjoyed reading, and traveling.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Antoinette (nee Carson), his 5 sons; Robert D., of Amherst, Mark A., of Salinas, CA, Thomas J., of Worthington, Leo M., of Palm Coast, FL, and Donald J., of Avon, his 2 daughters; Patricia C. Leonard, of North Ridgeville, and Mary Ann Leonard, of Washington D.C., his 9 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren, and his sister, Juliann Buri, of Mount Sterling, KY.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Antoni and Stella (nee Rybacki), brothers; Leo, Antoni, and Alex, and sisters;Frances Warkovich, Clara Mervis, and Jeanette Heinebrodt.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 11, 2006, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where closing prayers will be held the following morning at 9:30 a.m. A funeral mass will follow at 10:00 a.m., at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. The Rev. Fr. David Novak will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
