Victor R. Irene, 80, of Lorain, died Wednesday, November 1, 2006 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain following a short illness.
He was born June 12, 1926 in Toa Alta, Puerto Rico; he came to Lorain in 1947 and has lived here since.
Victor worked as a lineman for Ford Motor Co., Brookpark plant for 30 years, retiring in 1980. Following his retirement, he worked as the maintenance man for 20 years at Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain, retiring in 2000.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain, and the United Auto Workers Union Local 1250.
Victor was devoted to his church. In 1957, he began as an usher at the Sacred Heart on Vine Avenue in Lorain, and continued to serve while the church was in transition and in three different locations until the new church was built on Pearl Avenue. After retiring from Ford, Victor ministered to the church on a full time basis, having spent countless hours performing custodial work and preparing for Daily Masses and functions. He also dedicated many hours working in the kitchen to help with all the festivals and Sunday bake sales. Over the years, he was involved with the Liturgical Commission, Marriage Encounter, The Counters Ministry, Holy Name Society, Parish Council, and served as Eucharistic Minister, and was a Cursillista.
Surviving is his wife of 56 years, Aida E. (nee Gonzalez); a son, Joseph of North Royalton; daughters, Gisela Dempsey of Lorain, Angela Matos of Lorain, Mary Lou White of Stow, and Carmen Houseman of Lorain; 4 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter; 3 brothers and 3 sisters.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ezequiel Irene and Providencia (Rivera) Irene; and 9 brothers and sisters.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home. The family will also receive friends on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of mass at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Avenue, Lorain. Rev. Fr. William Thaden, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
