Virginia Rosario Pagan

July 24, 1924 — June 20, 2009

Virginia Rosario Pagan died at the age of 83 on Saturday, June 20th, after a long illness surrounded by her family. She was the treasured daughter of Maria Antera Gonzalez Ortiz and Neopomuceno Pagan Diaz and cherished granddaughter of Pablo Pagan and Ramona Diaz (paternal) and Ines Gonzalez and Vicenta Ortiz (maternal); loving sister of Ramon, Jose, Vicenta, Evarista, Juan and Juanita who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her grandson Camilo James Barkus; devoted wife of Felix A. Rosario Zayas for 64 and a half years and beloved mother of Marti Skarupa (Joe), Elba Armstrong, Lil Barkus, Felix Rosario Jr. (Mary), Jose Rosario (Denise) and Rosa Keene (James); as well as ten grandchildren six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Born in Ciales, Puerto Rico of Spanish descent, she came to the USA in 1950. Initially she was a homemaker and later worked as a skilled seamstress for Joseph and Feiss Co., maker of fine men's apparel, until her retirement.

She was proud of her Spanish background in Puerto Rico and would often remind her family of how she learned to read and write in the small schoolhouse her father built for the children who came from miles away to attend classes. It was this same remarkable man who also fed countless hungry people who passed through his farm during the depression, and built a small chapel in their home so Mass could be said for those in the region.

Throughout her life and well into her retirement, she enjoyed cultivating her beautiful flower gardens in the spring, summer, and fall. Winter found her crocheting, embroidering, and dressmaking with a song in her heart. Always the perfect hostess she delighted in cooking meals that brought her friends and family together to share each other's company.

She was an anchor of strength, a bright beam of guiding light, and a fountain of love to all her friends and family. Her memory will forever be cherished.
