Virginia Sonye, 88, (nee Zekany) of Avon, died Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Avon Oaks Caring Community following a brief illness.
Mrs. Sonye was born in Cherry Tree, West Virginia on October 16, 1921. She was the daughter of the late Alexander and Elizabeth (nee Gyenge) Zekany. She was a graduate of Logan High School in Logan, WV, and received her Registered Nurse degree from the C & O Hospital in Huntington, WV.
She and her husband of over 50 years, Frank Sonye, were married on September 25, 1943 in Logan, WV. After moving to Lorain in 1950, Virginia was employed as a surgical nurse at St. Joseph Hospital. She then worked for the Lorain City Schools as a school nurse for nearly 30 years.
She was a member of the Hungarian Reformed Church for 60 years. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, ceramics, knitting, and collecting stamps and coins. After retirement, she joined the Lorain Retired School Teachers Association and the Kitchen Kuties, a choir that regularly performed for area nursing homes.
Mrs. Sonye is survived by her sons, Frank Jr. of Rochester Hills, MI, Paul of Avon Lake, and Daniel of Hacienda Heights, CA; granddaughters, Carolyn Smith of Brighton, MI and Laura Duff of Royal Oak, MI; and two great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where funeral services will be Thursday at 11:00 am. Rev. Peter Toth, pastor of Hungarian Reformed Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp.
