Wayne R. Dovin

December 11, 1943 — July 11, 2022

Wayne R. Dovin, age 78, of Fort Myers, Florida, passed away Monday, July 11, 2022, at St. Luke Lutheran Community at Portage Lake, Akron, following a lengthy illness.

Born December 11, 1943, in Lorain, he moved to McCormick, South Carolina in 1998, then to Florida in 2001.

Wayne was a 1961 graduate of Lorain High School, received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Akron, a master’s degree from Bowling Green State University, and a degree in mortuary science from Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science.

Wayne retired in 1998 as an educator in the business department of Elyria High School with twenty-eight years with the Elyria School System.  Prior to this he taught in the Lorain City Schools System for two years and worked as an assistant administrator at Allen Memorial Hospital for two years.  He was also a former Licensed Ohio Funeral Director and Embalmer for many years.

Wayne attended St. John XXIII Catholic Church in Fort Myers and while living in Lorain, he was a member of St. Peter Parish.

He was a member of the National Teachers Association, Northeast Ohio Teachers Association, Ohio Education Association, Career Education Association, Greater Lorain Funeral Directors Association, Fort Myers Beach Moose Lodge, and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. 

Wayne enjoyed boating and was a former active member of the Westlake Yacht Club and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Lorain Flotilla.

Wayne enjoyed taking cruises, dancing, boating, investing, and following the stock market and was a master scuba diver.

He is survived by his son, James “Jimmy” Dovin (fiancé Helen Tauscher) of New Franklin, sisters-in-law, Susan Dovin of Amherst, Pat (Jim) Zink of Pennsylvania, and Cheryl (Jeff) Roth of Lorain; and several nieces and nephews.  He is also survived by his best friend in Florida, Cheryl Curry; her daughter, Monica (David) Nelson; and her grandchildren, Grace, and Braddon. 

He was preceded in death by his wife of thirty-four years, Joan (nee Kruppa) Dovin in 2002; his parents, John R. and Wanda A. (nee Kowalski) Dovin; and his brother, Launey J. Dovin in 2013.

Private services were held for the family with burial in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.  A Celebration of Life will be held later this year in Ft. Myers, Florida.
