William Francis McDermott

William Francis "Bill" McDermott, 85, of Lorain, died Sunday, November 5, 2006 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain following a short illness.
He was born September 1, 1921 in Troy, New York. At the age of four, he and his family moved to Buffalo, New York, then he came to Lorain in 1953.
He served in the US Army as a Sergeant during World War II. He received the American Defense Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Victory Medal, American Theater Medal, Good Conduct Medal and 1 Service Stripe and 1 Overseas Bar. Prior to this he served in the National Guard for 2 years.
He worked for Household Finance Corporation in Lorain for 30 years. He then worked at City Bank in Lorain as the manager of the consumer finance department until retiring in 1983.
Bill was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain, where he was active in the couple's ministries program and the Cursillo Movement. He was also a member of the international organization of Missionary Cenacle Apostolate, served on the board of directors for Sacred Heart Manor, Lorain, and served on the housing review board for the City of Lorain. He was a member of the James L. Martin Knights of Columbus Council 637 of Lorain.
Bill also served as director of volunteers at Amherst Hospital for many years.
Surviving is his daughter, Margaret Sechkar of Wakeman; sons, Michael of Madison, Wisconsin, William of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, Richard of Avon, Matthew of Palo Alto, California, Mark of Cleveland, and Sean of Elyria; 19 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Dorothea "Debbie" P. (nee Pollard) McDermott in 2004; his son, Dennis in 1992; parents, William McDermott, and Mary (nee McDonald) McDermott; a brother, Richard in 1995.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 2-4 & 6-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where funeral service will be Friday at 8:15 a.m. followed by mass at 9:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Avenue, Lorain. Rev. Fr. William Thaden, pastor, will officiate.
