William J. Papp

William J. Papp, age 91, of Lorain, died Monday, May 22, 2023, at his home while under the care of his wife, daughters, family, and New Life Hospice.

Born August 30, 1931, in Elyria, he was a lifelong resident of Lorain. William graduated from St. Mary High School in Lorain and served in the US Navy aboard the U.S.S Cadmus and U.S.S. Whitley during the Korean War. He received the Navy’s Northern Domain of the Polar Bear certificate for crossing the Arctic Circle. William returned home from the Navy in 1953, and that same year he married his high school sweetheart, Lucy Wohrle. They just celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on May 16.

William worked as a carpenter at Lorain Works US Steel for 36 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish in Lorain and the United Steel Workers Union 1104. He enjoyed computers, bowling, golfing, and woodworking.

Surviving is his wife, Lucy; daughters, Cathy (Lou) Ciehanoski of Amherst, Cindy (Jim) Griffiths of Kent, and Christine Papp of Lorain; grandchildren, Amanda, Jaron, and Erica; great-grandchildren, Hayden and Jase.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Regina (nee Geng) Papp; son, Mark; and sisters, Margaret George and Mary Strong.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral and Cremation Specialists, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Friday at 9:30 in the funeral home, followed by mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish, 2143 Homewood Drive, Lorain. Rev. Neil Walters, pastor, will officiate. Entombment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain. The Amvets Post 32 Honor Guard will conduct military honors.
