William V. "Worm" Zakowski, age 54, of Amherst, died on Thursday, July 28, 2005 at his residence.
Born on August 6, 1950 in Lorain, he lived in Lorain until moving to Amherst in 1997.
He was employed in the shipping/receiving dept. at US Steel for 35 years, retiring in 2004. He was a member of the United Steel Workers Union Local #1104.
"Worm" enjoyed racing at Lorain County Speedway, where he raced for over 20 years, and was the track champion in the grand national division for several years. He also enjoyed working on cars and riding his motorcycle.
He is survived by his wife of 19 years: Songa (nee Loyd), sons: William Zakowski, Jr. of Elyria, Tony Zakowski, of Lorain, Cody Zakowski of Amherst, Anthony Zakowski of Amherst, Mike Smith, of Lorain, and Brian Smith, of Charleston, SC, daughters: Rebecca L. Zakowski, of Amherst, Melissa Jones, of Lorain, Tamara Sova, of Lorain and Valerie Davison, of Avon Lake, 20 grandchildren, and sister: Pamela Hayto, of Lorain, 2 nieces, 1 nephew, 1 great-niece and 1 great-nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents: William Zakowski in 1997, Margaret A. (nee Dadas) in 2000, granddaughter: Hope Star Smith in 2001.
Family will receive friends on Sunday, July 31, 2005 from 4:00 p.m. until time of memorial service at 5:00 p.m. at the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Rev. Mr. Robert J. Dybo, deacon at Nativity B.V.M. Church, will officiate.
